This bulletin informs industry stakeholders, including body repairers, canopy fitment centers, insurers, and fleet operators—of the structural risks associated with canopy fitment on modern light-duty vehicles (LDVs). It outlines mandatory and recommended reinforcement measures, including the use of J-Braces and similar structural supports, and clarifies implications on warranty and insurance coverage.

 

2       Background and Industry-Wide Risk:

Many newer LDVs are designed with lightweight materials (e.g., thinner gauge steel, aluminum) for improved fuel efficiency and load handling. However, this results in reduced torsional rigidity. When heavy accessories such as canopies, roof racks, or drawer systems are installed without proper reinforcement, these vehicles are prone to structural stress, cracking, and deformation. In some cases, warranty and insurance coverage may be voided.

 

3       Known Affected Models and Manufacturer Guidance:

3.1      Ford Ranger (2023–Present)

  • J-Brace is mandatory when fitting a
